It is believed that the ancestors of the pit bull terriers were American Staffordshire terriers. Until now, this breed is not recognized by the FCI – the International Canine Federation, and does not have strict standards. The breed is registered in the ICS, in many EU countries is prohibited. In other countries there are a number of strict restrictions on the content of the pit bulls.
In the US, this breed has always been popular and was used for dog fighting. Terriers and bulldogs were involved in its creation. The former awarded the pit bulls an ultrafast response, the latter with stubbornness and strength. These qualities made the American Pit Bull Terrier machine for fighting, rescue searches and hunting.
After a dogfight ban was imposed in America, pitbull breeding was prohibited. In the press flashed news about the attacks of pit bull terriers on people, accompanied by comments and creepy photos.
Today, the popularity of pit bulls that have been socialized in society has spread beyond the borders of the United States. Because of their developed sense of smell, they are used by the police, in particular, to search for drugs and explosives. In terms of increased loyalty to a person, strict requirements are imposed on the breed. So, teaching pit bulls disciplines related to aggression towards people is prohibited.
There are two types of American pit bull terriers: bulldog type and terriers. There are no strict requirements for weight: it can vary from 12 to 36 kilograms. On average – 14-28 kg.
The head is of medium length, rectangular. The skull is flat, wide. Cheeks bulging.
Jaws strong, powerful. Bite “scissors”.
Nose with wide open nostrils. The bee can be any color.
Ears are high, natural. Docking is allowed, but not required.
The eyes are almond-shaped. Hue of the cornea any.
The neck is arched, muscular, dry, extending towards the withers.
The back is strong, short, sloping.
Shoulders obliquely set, strong.
The thorax is narrow, deep. The ribs are closely adjacent to each other, moderately convex.
The tail is low set, short, tapering towards the base.
Limbs long, strong. Paws are medium in size. Gait springy.
Wool has no undercoat, tight to the body, coarse, short. There is no fur on the belly.
Color is allowed any (except merle). It can be brindle, with marks.
