INDIFFERENCE – FIRST STEP OF FEAR.
Like many other dog breeders, I started my way with the textbook “Fundamentals of Service Dog Breeding”. There were other books, but they were small and, in fact, they all contained the same cynological elements. For example, the unshakable postulate: a service dog must be suspicious of people. Mistrustful and always ready to protect his master and his property from enemies. Doesn’t this remind you of the ideology of the Stalin times, when people in society were brought up in incredulity and constant readiness to fight the enemies? Everyone could be a potential enemy of society and this rule was mechanically transferred to dog breeding.
Times went on, manners changed, but the service dog still had to be suspicious of people. Constantly ready to rush at a potential enemy – real or imaginary. It was considered normal if an evil dog could throw itself at a man running to the bus, at the children screaming and waving hands. After all, she was taught so: to pursue and detain the running, screaming violator. Specially poisoned, developed anger and distrust. Then, naturally, such a dog was supposed to be among people only on a leash and in a muzzle.
Shock came later when the test rules began to change. Instead of pursuing a passively fleeing violator, the dogs began to be demanded to fight the person involved, who actively resisted and launched a counterattack. Dozens of dogs with high degrees diplomas ZKS (protective guard duty) shamefully failed to test under the new rules. Faced with active resistance and a counterattack of a man, the dogs ran off with a tail between their legs. Distrustful and angry service dogs often turned out to be checked viciously cowardly.
THE DOG IS NOT AGGRESSIVE WITHOUT CAUSE
Neither man nor any animal normally shows aggression if there is no reason for it. Aggression is always combined with attack, with violence – and for a living organism it is better to avoid aggression. Fear is one of the main causes of aggression. And not only manifested in an extreme form, when an animal, squeezed into a corner in a panic, attacks, having no other opportunity to escape from danger. With a high degree of aggressiveness and a small degree of fear, the dog attacks according to the principle of “the best defense-attack method”. If the dog did not anticipate a threat from the object of the attack, the attack simply would not exist.
The reason for most domestic urban bites is misunderstanding between two species: homo sapiens and kanis familiaris. On the one hand, people unknowingly provoke a dog to attack, on the other hand, a lack of understanding of human behavior (such as a lack of socialization) leads to a preventive attack of a person by a dog.
Our long experience shows that the peaceful coexistence of people and dogs (even such large, tough and aggressive as a Rottweiler) is quite possible and not as problematic as many people think. Output in mutual socialization. People who are not even interested in dogs, could receive at least a minimum of information about the behavior of dogs and the rules of relationships with them. As a teacher of biology, it is not clear to me why children in biology lessons are taught the structure of flatworms or the characteristics of plant tissues, but they do not have basic knowledge of animals living next to us. This is simply not the case in curricula, despite the fact that the ability to understand and care for domestic animals is of immediate practical importance to us.
